Reconstructive cheiloplasty corrects birth defects (harelip, cleft palate), the consequences of injuries and unsuccessful plastic surgeries. Aesthetic cheiloplasty is aimed at correcting age-related changes or anatomical features of the lips (small size, inexpressive outlines, and asymmetry).
Indications
The main indication for cheiloplasty is dissatisfaction with the shape or size of the lips.

Contraindications
Cheiloplasty has the following contraindications:
- severe chronic diseases;
- acute infectious diseases, severe runny nose;
- herpetic eruptions in the procedure area;
- the tendency to form keloid scars;
- period of pregnancy and lactation.
Cheiloplasty using the “bullhorn” method is not performed for people with a short upper lip and a low set columella of the nose. In these situations, it is difficult to hide the suture that will remain after the operation.
Cheiloplasty description
Cheiloplasty often performed according to the method of “bullhorn” (from the English bullhorn – bovine horns). The name was not chosen by chance, since the incision during the operation resembles the horns of this animal.
At the beginning of the procedure, the plastic surgeon sanitizes the skin and applies markings. The next stage is anesthesia. Cheiloplasty is often performed under local anesthesia: the skin around the lips is pumped up with an anesthetic solution.
After that, the surgeon makes a skin incision. There are 2 options for the cut:
- Under the nose. The method is preferable since it is easier to hide the scar.
- Over the upper lip.
In both cases, the plastic surgeon removes part of the skin and tightens the lower edge of the wound to the top. Due to this, the area is stretched, which allows you to raise the red edge of the upper lip.
At the end of the operation, sutures are applied to the skin. The patient does not remain in the hospital and may return home.
